Carcasonne Country House

2019 / Languedoc / Ongoing

The existing garden was rich with mature trees and wide lawns which wrapped around a fine country house dating back to the 13th Century. However, whilst the garden had privacy and greenery it lacked coherence and excitement.

We designed a masterplan; creating new spaces and connecting up old - new views and vistas through to the vineyards and the countryside beyond alongside new planting in the foreground giving colour and interest where it’s been absent.

Our focus was on Soft Landscaping and we planted over 2,500 plants and trees; a previously functional path to the tennis court is now a walkway of cushion pruned flowering evergreens laid out beneath a high tree canopy, we removed tired hedges to create an acre of stylish Mediterranean gravel garden to frame the entrance of the house. We gave shape and structure to planting around the wild ponds and opened up a new view from the house by removing a section of trees to frame the scene beyond with newly planted mature Cupressus sempervirens ‘Pyramidalis’..

We returned in 2022 and are currently working on further designs, new ideas and enhancments to new spaces.
